Lindy Gholson, 91, died on June 4, 2019 in Plano, Texas in the care of his wife Joyce, and Ardent Hospice. A long resident of Cass County, he had recently lived in Texarkana and Plano over his objections that there was “too much concrete” in the big city.
He was born November 27, 1927 to Jim and Elle Gholson. He developed polio in 1929 and spent the rest of his life fighting to walk normally. His immediate family considered him their personal “George Bailey” as he was 4F for service in World War II. He graduated from Atlanta High School in 1945. He began his career at the Texas Highway Department District 19 in 1948 and worked there for 32 years. He also had a second Saturday job surveying but made sure Sunday was spent in church to celebrate the Lord’s Day. He particularly enjoyed his Men’s Sunday school class at the Atlanta First Baptist Church in his later years. He was preceded in death by his Mother and Father; sister, Geraldine Maxwell; brothers, Theron Gholson, Lawrence Gholson, Horace Gholson and Carroll Gholson.
He is survived by his wife of 68 years, Joyce Gholson; his daughters, Vicki Smith and Angie D’Amore; sons-in-law, Kyle Smith and Tom D’Amore; grandchildren, Shannon Hite and husband George Hite, Mitch Smith, Kelsey D’Amore and Anthony D’Amore; and great-granddaughters, Brooke and Alexis Hite.
We will miss his sly sense of humor, his patience and his love of movies and sports. We will especially miss his gentle and giving spirit, wise counsel and unflappable character. “He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, he is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.” Psalm 91:1-2.
Funeral services will be 2:00 pm, Saturday, June 8, 2019 in the Hanner Funeral Chapel with Bro. David Markham officiating.
Visitation will be Friday, June 7, 2019 from 6 pm to 8 pm at Hanner Funeral Service.
Interment will be in New Colony Cemetery, Linden, Texas.
