Hooks Man Dead After Police Standoff

Police arrived on scene after calls were made about the man threatening utility workers with a gun.

Statement from Hooks Police:

“On Friday, February 3, 2023, at approximately 9:54 am the Hooks Police Department, the Bowie County Sheriff’s Office, and the Texas Department of Public Safety responded to a report of a subject pointing a gun at utility workers. Officers were advised by SWEPCO employees that they had been threatened by a subject at 112 W. 22nd street and that the subject had pointed a gun at them.

A Hooks Police Officer and two Bowie County deputies arrived on scene and attempted to make contact with the known resident, William Boyd Estes. At that time, Mr. Estes fired shots in the direction of the officers with an unknown caliber weapon. Officers were able to contain the scene and Bowie County Negotiators responded and were able to establish communication with Mr. Estes. After several hours of negotiations and several failed attempts to get Mr. Estes to exit his residence peacefully, at approximately 3:20 pm communications with Mr. Estes ceased.

Hooks Police then requested the assistance of the TTPD SWAT team. Shortly after their arrival, SWAT team members attempted to force Mr. Estes from the residence by inserting pepper gas. Once these actions started, they heard what was believed to be a muffled gunshot. SWAT team members were able to approach the residence at which time it was determined that Mr. Estes had taken his own life with what was believed to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

This incident remains under investigation. The Hooks Police department sends our heartfelt condolences to all affected by this tragic event. No criminal charges have been filed and none are expected at this time. “
