Rance J. Thomas, of Atlanta TX, passed away on November 30, 2023, in Texarkana, TX, at 95 years old. Born December 29, 1927, in Bivins, TX, to William Sloan “Loan” Thomas and Lila Olivia Thomas.
Rance was preceded in death by his wife of 56 years, Margaret Thomas, grandson Brett Thomas, daughter-n-law Kim Thomas, sisters Ordria, Gladys, Willie Sloan, Edith, and brother R.P. He is survived by daughter and son-n-law Brenda and Ken Smith of Atlanta, TX, son and daughter-n-law Randal and Lorrie Thomas of Haynesville, LA, son Roland Thomas of Rehobeth, AL, daughter and son-n-law Sharee and John Partain of Kyle, TX, and daughter and son-n-law Sheila and Stephen Corbett of Texarkana, TX. He also leaves behind ten grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild, as well as an older sister, Eutha Wiley, an older brother, Roy Thomas, and countless extended family and friends.
Rance married Margaret Simmons Thomas on November 21, 1945; together they created a life full of love and adventure. He was a WWII Navy veteran, and worked his way up through the ranks in the oilfield to drilling superintendent working throughout the US and overseas. After leaving the oilfield, he kept close to the oilfield life by hauling pipe to rig locations across the country. Apart from his work life, Rance earned his 32nd Degree in the Masonic Lodge of Kildare, TX, and was an accomplished musician. Beginning in his childhood playing fiddle in a dance band with his brother Roy, he enjoyed Western Swing and Classic Country music. Rance continued his love of music, playing bass guitar for area bands well into his 80s.
Rance Thomas will be remembered for his strong minded, tough as boot-leather character that made him resilient throughout all of his life’s obstacles. Now united with his beloved wife, Margaret, he leaves behind the legacy of a man who embodied the timeless values of hard work, honor, and unwavering strength.
A service to honor and celebrate his memory will be held at a later date.
