Gunter vs Tidehaven

By Marlon Sullivan

The three-time state champion Gunter Tigers added another trophy to their case beating the Tidehaven
Tigers in the nightcap at AT&T stadium 30-14. Tidehaven who beat Dangerfield in the semifinal game last
week in overtime could not stop the Gunter’s running attack lead by Sr. QB Walker Overman.
Tidehaven’s defense which had eight shutouts coming in to tonight’s battle was no match for the always
strong Gunter Oline who manhandled the Tidehaven DLine all night.
Overman threw for one touchdown and rushed for another, amassing 149 yards passing and 164 rushing
for a total of 313. The smallish but very speedy and extremely tough Sr. QB sliced and diced his way
through the Tidehaven defense all night long.
Key also in the win for Gunter was stopping Baylor commit Joeseph Dodds in the second half. Holding
the 5’-11” 205lbs running back to only 16 yards in the second half after Dodds had rushed for 150 yards
in the first half.
It was Gunter’s sixth appearance in the championship game in the last nine years. Coach Jake Fiezel has
built a high-level winning program that captured their second title in as many years. The young men
from just up the road in Grayson County between Frisco and Sherman play the game hard, fast and very
physical.
