According to the DPS, John L. Stanford of Avinger fled a traffic stop in the Harleton area and died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. It occurred on August 28 at around 10:30 pm. Stanford drove away from a traffic stop, and the trooper followed for about ten miles before Stanford stopped, exited his vehicle, and fled on foot. As he ran, Stanford fired his handgun at the officer, who returned fire. They later located Stanford with a fatal self-inflicted gunshot wound.
